The theme of the workshop to take place in Viana do Castelo in July 2014 will be “Freedom”, using photography and optic media as the main visual mediums.
Indeed the word ‘freedom’ implicates a wide range of meanings, either, the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint; the absence of subjection to any form of domination; the power of self-determination attributed to the will; the quality of being independent of fate or necessity, or merely the openness of one to speech or behavior.
The workshop will explore the implications of the term and how to question and represent ‘freedom’ visually through pictures or images. Participants can use both photography and video equipment, mainly the photography and video studios and editing rooms. Participants can decide on a certain technique, or use a cross-over of different methods and materials.
Participants are encourage to bring with them photographs or texts that discuss or encage with the idea of ‘freedom’. The laboratory concept is grounded in a set of texts and images in order to propose a starting point to frame and develop the final work.
Expected Profile of the Participants
Participants should have a strong engagement in visual arts and an open mind, in order to question the possibilities of representing the idea and the concept of ‘freedom’ through images. Although a full technical knowledge of the mediums is not required, basic skills are required. Experimenting and developing their own ideas as well as being able to work independently are essential to all participants in the laboratory.
